What Business Architecture Certification Actually Costs to Deliver

Summary: A base of knowledge tells you what the discipline covers. A methodology tells you how to actually produce it. Which one you need depends on which problem you are trying to solve - a checkbox on a job description, or a map that a business will accept on Monday morning. The full analysis behind these numbers is available as a downloadable article.

Every row shows what the open market charges at the low and high end for a CBA -path candidate to acquire that item separately, next to what a BACOE practitioner pays for it inside the $3,895. The rightmost column is the same for every row - because it is the same fee.

What the CBA path actually costs a real candidate

Sourced from the Business Architecture Guild’s own FAQ, from GATP®-accredited training providers, and from independent third-party reviews. The $125 does not stop. Guild membership is required for as long as the CBA credential remains valid – that is the language on the Guild’s own certification pages. Drop the membership, and the credential lapses.

Line by line cost of CBA certification in year one
Line item Cost
Certification (what most people count)
CBA® exam fee $375
Business Architecture Guild® individual membership (required to sit for the exam, and required indefinitely to keep the credential valid) $125 / year
GATP® accredited or third-party prep program $1,500 to $2,900
Certification subtotal, year one $2,000 to $3,400

And that is only the certification. Everything you need to actually deliver is priced separately.

The CBA credential attests to the BIZBOK vocabulary. It does not include the capability map templates, value stream templates, information concept models, workshop facilitation, business architecture tools, or mentoring that a business architect actually needs to produce accepted deliverables. Here is what the open market charges for each of those.

Line by line cost of the tooling, methodology and services needed to reach feature parity outside CBA certification
Line item Cost
To actually do the work (typically purchased separately)
Business architecture methodology $1,500 to $4,500
Capability, value, and information model template library $500 to $1,500
Business architecture modeling tool license (BiZZdesign, Capsifi / OrbusInfinity, Ardoq class) $500 to $5,000 / yr
Live workshop facilitation (1 to 2 sessions at consultant day rates) $1,500 to $5,000
Mentoring (a week at mid-tier rates) $1,000 to $3,000
Feature-parity add-on subtotal $5,000 to $19,000

Sources: Capstera Professional Services Business Architecture Reference Model ($1,499 to $4,449); Capstera Business Capabilities Profile Template ($35 to $99 each); BiZZdesign business architecture module pricing (custom quote; approximately $2,000 to $10,000 per year benchmark); Capsifi / OrbusInfinity Business Architecture module (quote-based; parent platform approximately £72,500 per year benchmark); Ardoq benchmark pricing ($60,000 per year entry; pilots from $5K to $15K); CognitusEA published business-architecture consulting rates (USD $130 per person-hour); Mason Advisory G-Cloud rate card (£595 to £1,575 per day); MentorCruise mentoring packages ($140 to $400 per month).

What that $125 turns into over time

The exam fee is one-shot. The prep course is one-shot. The Guild membership compounds - for as long as the credential stays valid.

Cumulative cost of holding CBA certification over one, five and ten years, excluding tooling and services
Line item Cost
Year one, certification only $2,000 to $3,400
Five years, certification only $2,500 to $4,000
Ten years, certification only $3,250 to $4,650

Every year, another $125. It does not stop as long as the credential is meant to stay on the resume - and none of it buys the tools you still don’t have.

What BACOE actually costs

The credential does not expire. There is no membership organization to keep paying. And every item a CBA holder still has to source separately - methodology, templates, workshops, mentoring - is inside this number.

What is inside the $3,895

  • Methodology and models - the working method for producing business architecture deliverables, not just a body of knowledge describing what they are.

  • Map templates  industry-agnostic frames that a practitioner can specialize for a given business.

  • Value templates - stakeholder-anchored value frames ready for tailoring.

  • Information concept model and organization model templates - the artifacts BIZBOK describes but does not provide.

  • Work breakdown structures - task-by-task, deliverable-by-deliverable, so a certified practitioner knows what to do on Monday morning.

  • Business architecture modeling tool access - the software environment for producing maps, value analysis, business capabilities, and information concept models, so a certified practitioner does not have to license a separate BiZZdesign, Capsifi/OrbusInfinity, or Ardoq seat to start delivering.

  • Video instruction - a self-paced library covering every method and template, available for the life of the credential.

  • Live workshops - instructor-led sessions where practitioners apply the methods to real scenarios.

  • Mentoring direct access to certified mentors through the practitioner environment.

  • BACOE diagnostic tool – an assessment of a business architecture function, included at no extra charge.

The question that actually matters

Even if the totals were identical, “which is cheaper” would not be the interesting question.

The interesting question is what each certification attests to when you’ve paid.
